The Washingtonville Police Department was presented with a very unique opportunity to help enhance their professional techniques through the use of Martial Arts on Thursday, August 20th. Acting Chief Stephen Bogert invited Master Mike Barnard, owner of Han Ho Martial Arts, Middletown, NY and Han Ho Hapkido Instructor Chris Coyle to present their customized program: Hapkido: Police Defensive Tactics. Together with the assistance of Tae Kwon Do Instructor Daniel Post, they offered a free, three hour seminar to the Washingtonville Police Department on obtaining close quarter supremacy and control when firearms are not an option.
Hapkido is the Korean Martial Art of self defense utilizing joint manipulation, pressure point strikes and control through pain compliance. By working in harmony with the force exerted from an opponent, the Hapkido practitioner successfully redirects the energy to gain control. It has been practiced in Korea since 372 AD. By properly utilizing these techniques, the officers are kept safe during the execution of an arrest and greatly reduce the risk of using excessive force while apprehending a suspect. This also reduces the risk of injury for both the officer and the suspect. This specialized program is available to other departments and groups. A focused Women’s Self Defense Course is also available through Han Ho of Middletown.
